Oracle APEX is excellent for internal applications. But as a business’s public website, it shows its limits: URLs like /ords/f?p=123:5:1029384756::NO that search engines struggle with, slow mobile pages, little control over metadata, and every content change requires an APEX developer.
Moving to a modern stack such as Astro + React fixes that, as long as you keep existing links, printed QR codes and rankings intact.
1. Understand APEX URLs
/ords/f?p=APP:PAGE:SESSION:REQUEST:DEBUG:CLEAR:ITEMS:VALUES
APP:PAGE (e.g. 123:5) identifies the page. The session changes on every visit, so it is useless for mapping. Some pages also use ITEMS:VALUES to show a specific record.
2. Build the inventory
Export the APEX app and list every public page, check Search Console for URLs with traffic, find where links are printed (QR menus, flyers), and build an old URL → new page table. That map is the most valuable asset of the migration.
3. Build the new site with clean URLs
Astro renders every page as static HTML with clean URLs. Add what APEX did not give you: per-page titles and descriptions, structured data, Open Graph images, a sitemap and fast mobile performance.
4. 301 redirects from old URLs
Every APEX URL should answer with a 301 redirect to its new equivalent. With Nginx, use a map on the p argument:
map $arg_p $apex_target {
default "";
"~^123:1(:|$)" "/";
"~^123:5(:|$)" "/menu/";
"~^123:8(:|$)" "/locations/";
}
server {
location /ords/ {
if ($apex_target) { return 301 $apex_target; }
return 301 /;
}
}
With many records, generate the map from your data with a script.
5. Zero-risk cutover
- Publish the new site on a review subdomain (with
noindex) for approval. - Production stays untouched meanwhile.
- On launch day, switch the main domain, enable redirects and submit the new sitemap.
- Watch Search Console for 404s over the following weeks and extend the map.
Some ranking movement for a few weeks is normal while Google processes the redirects. With a complete 301 map and a faster, better-structured site, traffic typically recovers and grows.
